Women turned Mr. Darcy's head

Seattle designer Pam Claussen’s adoration for vintage Victorian style extends well beyond her thriving business, Glam by Pam, and is reflected in every room of her home. Here, in the grand 650-square-foot master bath, Pam has created a beautiful sanctuary, complete with an eighteenth-century Louis XV chandelier, handblown marble sinks, Gothic wallpaper, richly upholstered furniture, and a custom-designed stained glass window. She also displays a selection of her one-of-a-kind glittering creations—elegant crowns, tiaras, and bridal headpieces and accessories.

In an interview with Victoria magazine, Pam states,"she revels in the Pride and Prejudice era, when women turned Mr. Darcy's head with a flirtatious fan."

For more information and to view Pam Claussen’s work, visit glambypam.net.

To learn more about Pam Claussen and her business, see “Crown Jewels,” on page 76 of the September/October 2009 issue of Victoria magazine.

Preparing for the AGM: Brothers & Sisters poll

"Here you are in your own family."

The 2009 Steering Committee, having spent quite some time in the company of Jane Austen's brothers and sisters, are wondering what their JASNA brothers and sisters think of the siblings which Jane wrought. Which two brothers and which two sisters, created by Jane Austen, would JASNA members like to have as their own brothers and sisters? Please email us or send us the names of the two brothers and two sisters, created by Jane Austen, whom you would like to have for your very own. Results will be announced at the AGM and posted here after the close of the AGM. You do not need to be registered for the AGM to participate. You must, however, be a JASNA member.

Deadline for submission: August 31, 2009. Email: 2009AGMCoordinator@jasnaeastpa.org. Please put "Austen Family" in the subject line so that we tally your email.

Sandy's Chawton House Party

Sandy Lerner is the founder of the Chawton House Library, which specialized in early women's literature. A few weeks ago, she held a very special fund raising party at Chawton. Invited to the party were Elizabeth Garvie and David Rantoul, who were Elizabeth and Darcy in the 1980 Pride and Prejudice - our personal favorite.

Preparing for the AGM: Special Events

". . . there was so much to be said between the brother and sister."

No doubt JASNA brothers and sisters will have much to say about the many events that the 2009 AGM has to offer. Special events, special-interest sessions, workshops, demonstrations, and diversions, such as shopping at the Regency Emporium, will keep attendees occupied and entertained during their stay in the City of Brotherly Love. The city itself adds to the AGM's special events program by having many connections to Jane Austen. Brochures that list these connections will be distributed at the Philadelphia AGM so that attendees can go on the self-guided tours detailed in the brochures. Also, very good walkers can find Letterbox events, created by a JASNA member, in the surrounding Philadelphia counties.

August Wallpaper

Looking back at Ackermann's Repository. The original Ackermann's Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions, Manufactures, &c. was published monthly from 1809-1829 and featured a pair of fashion plates in addition to other illustrations and articles covering a variety of topics. These delicate aquatint illustrations and lovely fashions continue to delight and inspire us two hundred years later.

Throughout 2009, new desktop wallpapers will be posted each month showcasing two fashion plates: one from 1809 and the other from a different year during Jane Austen's lifetime. Enjoy a year-long tour through this popular late Georgian-Regency publication!
