Spun Sugar Bowls

Spun Sugar Bowls
Makes 12 bowls
Nonstick cooking spray1 1/4 cups sugar1/3 cup light corn syrup1/4 cup water
1. Thoroughly spray a 12-cup muffin pan with cooking spray; set aside.
2. In a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the sugar, corn syrup, and water. Cook until the mixture registers between 310° and 320° on an instant-read candy thermometer.
3. Remove the pan from the heat; carefully pour the sugar mixture into a medium microwave-safe bowl. Dip the tines of a fork into the hot sugar; then carefully and quickly wave the fork inside the wells, allowing the sugar to drip off of the fork in long, thin strands. Be sure to distribute strands evenly on the sides and bottoms of the wells, and all the way to the top. (When complete, you should still be able to see the pan through the sugar.)
4. Using a sharp kitchen knife, trim the edges of the sugar bowls by scraping the blade along the rims of the wells. Set aside to cool, about 5 minutes. Carefully unmold, and store in an airtight container in the freezer until ready to use. Save broken sugar pieces to use as a garnish, if desired.
Note: If the caramelized sugar thickens before you have finished all the bowls, microwave on HIGH for 3 to 5 minutes, until sugar is liquid enough to work with again. From Tea Time magazine.

JASNA-NY invites you to meet Amanda Root--Anne Elliott of Persuasion.

JASNA-NY states: We are delighted to announce that Ms. Root has graciously accepted our invitation to be interviewed by Elsa Solender about her appearance as Anne Elliot in the 1995 Sony film adaptation of Persuasion, praised by many critics as the best-ever adaptation of Austen's last completed novel. She will talk with Elsa about her preparations for playing Jane Austen's heroine opposite Ciaran Hinds (Captain Wentworth) and share some behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Mr. Hinds, when he saw the film on the big screen for the first time at our event in Brooklyn last year, particularly praised Ms. Root's performance. Most Janeites agree that she brilliantly brought to life one of Austen's most beloved and complex characters Amanda Root is currently appearing on Broadway in the highly acclaimed revival of Alan Aykebourne's comic trilogy The Norman Conquests. A Calendar, the Characters, and a Story of The Watsons

From the Jim and Ellen Website: "There is no consensus about the date of composition. There has been but one brief attempt to say what year it is supposed to take place in. Here is a summary of what has been said, and an argument on behalf of an 1801 calendar and another "gradual performance". Do you know this lady?

My dear fellow Janeites-I need your help.
I recently purchased this original painting in a shop in Princeton. The artist is signed C. Vonnoh. The shop knew nothing more about this fair lady. She is a contemporary painting as indicated by the unusual buildings in the village.
If you know anything about her, I would greatly appreciate it. Furthermore, I think she needs a title. In my mind I call her Aurora, as a nod to her surroundings. (Hint look real close at the village). Please leave suggestions for a title.
Thanks!

Book Suggestion: Jane Austen and the Fiction of her Time

This book presents Jane Austen as a radical innovator. It explores the nature of her confrontation with the popular novelists of her time, and demonstrates how her challenge to them transformed fiction. Mary Waldron shows how Austen's novels exemplify the strong skepticism about contemporary notions of the proper content and purpose of fiction that is evident from family letters and other sources. In thus identifying her literary motivation, this book offers a fresh and unifying critique of the novels.
