Morgan Library Trip a Success!

Don't miss out on the Morgan Library. It ends the end of March. Our group went this last Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We felt quite savvy as we were able to go around to each of the different letters, books, and illustrations. Our tea was very yummy-we had chicken salad, grilled cheese, fruit, tea cookies, and scones with a nice mug of tea. Thank you to Janeite Geri for arranging our grand adventure!

Penguin Classics Podcasts

"Penguin Classics On Air" has new podcasts you might enjoy:

This is from Penguin Classics Press Release:
"In the first, South African author Sheila Kohler speaks with Editorial Director Elda Rotor on the writing of her new book, the critically acclaimed Becoming Jane Eyre. Sheila discusses where she found her inspiration for the title, and what Charlotte Bronte's story means to her. Later in the episode, scholar Juliette Wells discusses the work of the Bronte sisters how they forever changed the way women wrote."

"In the next episode, Stephen Morrison speaks on two of England's most well-known women novelists, Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell. With all the new adaptations of Jane Austen's Emma and Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford and Return to Cranford (starring Judi Dench) now airing on PBS Masterpiece Theater, we wanted to explore with experts the importance of each author's work, what their works can tell us about the life of women in Britain's 18th Century, and why their stories still resonate today. Stephen speaks with Sue Birtwistle, the producer of Return to Cranford, as well as the much loved adaptation of Pride & Prejudice that starred Colin Firth and recruited Mr. Darcy fans everywhere. Stephen also speaks with Tanya Agathocleous, an Assistant Professor of English literature at Hunter College, specializing in 19th and 20th Century British Literature & Culture."

The American Friends of the Georgian Group Programs

The American Friends of the Georgian Group are having a couple of programs that might be of interest to you.

On Wednesday, February 10 at 5pm there will be a tour and reception of Zuber, Inc. at 200 East 59th Street at a cost of $45.

Zuber is the last company in the world to print scenic wallpapers using woodblocks. Their factory began making wallpapers in 1797 in Rixheim, France, in the same space they occupy today. Their collection contains over 100,000 seventeenth- and eighteenth-century woodblocks which are still used to create the friezes and wallpapers that evoke fantastic lands and exotic scenes. Some designs require as many as a thousand woodblocks to print one mural. Is it any wonder that in 1995 the French ministry of culture classified Zuber's original woodblocks historical monuments?

On Wednesday April 14, at 6pm, there will be a lecture entitled "Leisure in Georgian England" by Wendell Garrett.
