Juliette Wells Goucher College Podcast

JASNA-NY member, Professor Juliette Wells is the Goucher College Burke Jane Austen Scholar-in-Residence for 2009-2010. She gave a lecture titled "For the Love of Jane Austen" on Wednesday, February 17, at 7 p.m. in the Batza Room of the Athenaeum. Juliette discussed why present-day Austen fans so often choose to feature the author in their fiction and nonfiction writing.

Juliette is a prominent Jane Austen scholar and associate professor of English literature at Manhattanville College. Those of JASNA-NY who attended the regional meeting on March 6 in Manhattanville, had the pleasure of hearing her talk about Mrs. Burke.

Brooklyn Book Festival

The Brooklyn Book Festival is September 12, 2010 and our sisters, JASNA - New York Metro region has again purchased a vendor table at the Brooklyn Book Festival. This is a fun event and they always need volunteers. Last year they had 150 people sign their email list. A number of them have become members. JASNA-NY announces upcoming events

JASNA-NY's March Regional meeting will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Manhattanville College's Reid Castle in Purchase, NY

This full day (9:30am to 4:00pm) symposium "Inspired by Austen" will feature speakers, discussions and a S&S musical adaptation preview as well as welcome coffee/tea and lunch.

Transportation from New York's Grand Central Station will be available by chartered bus.

JASNY-NY is hosting a JA birthday celebration meeting on Dec 5 at 2pm at the Midtown Executive Club 40 West 45th Street, NYC.

Dr. Cheryl Kinney will explore the treatment of women's illnesses in Regency England, including childbirth, infectious disease, and venereal disease. We will learn who provided health care in the early 1800s in England and the treatments available. Dr. Kinney will also discuss sickness and health in Austen's novels.

Yale Center for British Art will be having 2 Exhibits this fall, might be of interest to our members.

We are considering renting a bus and having a day at the museum including a guided tour of the exhibits. The cost will run around $35 per person for transportation from NYC. JASNA-NY announces an event

JASNA-NY announces an event: Mother/daughter team of Jane Rubino and Caitlen Rubino-Bradway have written a book titled "Lady Vernon and Her Daughter" based on Austen's "Lady Susan".

The authors will be speaking on how they came to write the book, and of their love of Austen. They will also read a couple of excerpts from their book.

JASNA-NY will have a book signing after the talk. The event will be held:

Meet "Fanny Dashwood" with JASNA-NY

Harriet Walter, the distinguished British actress who created the nose-twisting, absolutely infuriating role of Fanny Dashwood in the acclaimed 1995 film adaptation of Sense & Sensibility, has graciously accepted our invitation to come talk with us about her extensive and fascinating preparation for the part.

Currently appearing on Broadway as Queen Elizabeth in the critically lauded production of Schiller's Mary Stuart, her free time is limited and precious. When she learned of our special interest in "her" Fanny Dashwood, she offered to share with us notes she wrote in preparing for her performance. No stranger to Austen's work, Ms Walter has recorded Lady Susan, Mansfield Park and some of the Austen Juvenilia. Fans of the television series based upon Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey novels will recall her fondly as Harriet Vane.

What was it like to play the righteous (and grasping) villainess of an Austen film adaptation? What was her "take" on one of the most memorable conversations of any Austen novel as Fanny talks her husband out of a deathbed pledge to his father to take care of his half sisters?

Meet Amanda Root

JASNA-NY invites you to meet Amanda Root--Anne Elliott of Persuasion.

JASNA-NY states: We are delighted to announce that Ms. Root has graciously accepted our invitation to be interviewed by Elsa Solender about her appearance as Anne Elliot in the 1995 Sony film adaptation of Persuasion, praised by many critics as the best-ever adaptation of Austen's last completed novel. She will talk with Elsa about her preparations for playing Jane Austen's heroine opposite Ciaran Hinds (Captain Wentworth) and share some behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Mr. Hinds, when he saw the film on the big screen for the first time at our event in Brooklyn last year, particularly praised Ms. Root's performance. Most Janeites agree that she brilliantly brought to life one of Austen's most beloved and complex characters Amanda Root is currently appearing on Broadway in the highly acclaimed revival of Alan Aykebourne's comic trilogy The Norman Conquests. Her outstanding performance has earned her both Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations for outstanding featured actress in 2009.

Travel and Transportation in JA Times

May 15-17, 2009, Port Jefferson, New York: JASNA’s Greater New York Region will sponsor a weekend event, “Travel & Transportation in the Time of Jane Austen.” Speakers include Sandy Lerner, founder of Chawton House Library and an expert on Regency era horse-drawn vehicles, Professor Janine Barchas of the University of Texas, and Professor Michael Simon of SUNY Stony Brook. Other activities include a welcome tea and cookies, an original stage production by Lynn Marie Macy, a dinner cruise on Long Island Sound, and a visit to The Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages. Mystery Writer in NYC

How intriguing to explore this idea! JASNA-NY invited the New York Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America to share their ideas about Jane Austen's skill in employing ambiguity and misleading her readers. Jane Cleland and Peggy Ehrhart, MWA members and authors of contemporary mysteries, will be our speakers. Jane will set forth the essentials of a good mystery novel and Peggy will illustrate how Emma employs those essentials with Austenian irony and insight into human nature.

Both authors will be available to sign copies of their most recently published mystery novels, and those attending will solve some minor mysteries during our "talk Jane" session. Come, learn more of Austen's prowess as a mystery writer, enjoy conversation with other Janeites, and a lavish tea.
