Meet the Janeites

How did you become a Janeite?  I've always been a history lover for all my life and enjoy reading novels of 18th and 19th centuries to gain an understanding of the mindset of those periods. Also after watching Persuasion starring Amanda Root and Sense and Sensibility with Kate Winslet I then purchased the Barnes and Noble book which contained all 7 novels of Jane Austen. Reading them I wondered why I never got into them way before!

Anything else you want to share?Recently I just got into seeing for the first time the Colin Firth 1995 Pride and Prejudice mini series and I really enjoyed it!

Any Sequels or Adaptations you enjoy?  Dancing with Mr. Darcy : Stories Inspired by Jane Austen and Chawton House by Hilary Spiers, Kristy Mitchell, Elaine Grotefeld, et al.

Anything else you want to share?  I didn't like Jane Austen as a teen when I was forced to read her works. But now I understand what a revolutionary and provocative writer she really was!

Meet the Janeites - Meredith

Name: Meredith

How did you become a Janeite?  Booze and Darcy’s white shirt late one night in college lead me to make life altering choices. I liked the tv adaptation so much that I began reading the novels. Then I found out about JASNA, and the rest is history. Amazing group of people talking about Jane Austen, her novels, and all things Regency, and we dress up sometimes, what could be better?

Favorite Jane Austen Novel?  Persuasion

Favorite Character?  Mr. Woodhouse, because really, who doesn't love cake? Seriously through, Ann Elliot. I think I see a lot of myself in her and she gets a second chance at happiness.

Favorite Movie Adaptation?  The story telling and actors in the Ehle/Firth version of P&P is a great adaptation. From a cinematography and sound track perspective, I love the Keira Knightly version of P&P.

Any Sequels or Adaptations you enjoy?  I separate out the adaptations from the originals, and just try to think of them as in the realm of Regency, and so my list is long of books that I have enjoyed. 

Anything else you want to share?  CNJ JASNA is a great group of dedicated readers of Jane Austen. I'm glad we have so much fun when we're together, whether it's a field trip or a book discussion.

How did you become a Janeite?  In Jr. H.S. I read Pride and Prejudice, and it immediately became my favorite book.

Anything else you want to share?  I had not heard about JASNA until I was doing online research for my course about Jane Austen. That was about 8 yrs ago when I really caught the Austen bug and had to read all the Austen novels.

Any Sequels or Adaptations you enjoy?  I was pretty much a purist until I realized JAFF (Jane Austen Fan Fiction) opened Austen up to a new audience. Abigail Reynold's books were the 1st I read that made me become something of an addict.

How did you become a Janeite?  I started young: I read "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility" first, though it was "Persuasion" (when I was about 13) that really converted me. I fell in love with it.

Favorite Movie Adaptation?  Emma Thompson and Ang Lee's "Sense and Sensibility."

Any Sequels or Adaptations you enjoy?  "The Jane Austen Project" by Kathleen Flynn -- does that count? Also Jo Baker's "Longbourn."

Anything else you want to share?  I wrote a stage play based on "Persuasion," which [was] performed at The Players Club in New York City on April 9th, and I'm quite excited about it!

Meet the Janeites - Amelia (CNJ JASNA Regional Chair)

Name: Amelia

How did you become a Janeite?  In college after reading Emma for a history class. That summer I had a kind of boring job and started listening to audiobooks. I decided I enjoyed Emma, maybe I'll read more Jane Austen novels and picked Persuasion. That did it for me, I had to read them all and soon found myself in grad school and made a friend who also enjoyed Jane Austen.  We were both reading this blog and decided to try a meeting out before we joined JASNA.  The rest is CNJ JASNA history.

Favorite Character?  Captain Wentworth

Favorite Movie Adaptation?  From Prada to Nada. It's not the best movie or adaptation, but I find it highly enjoyable. 

Any Sequels or Adaptations you enjoy?  Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star by Heather Lynn Rigaud

Anything else you want to share?  I'm kind of picky when it comes to sequels or adaptations of the novels, but over the last few years I've found I'm pretty on target for any Mary Bennet story.
