A Gothic Halloween

All Hallow's Eve - Jane Austen Centre

Happy Halloween!

I went around with trying to find something fun to post today in honor of Halloween and instead found a bunch of really interesting articles and Gothic/spooky stories to share.

Regency Era Ghost Stories from Ackermann's Repository - E K Duncan
All Hallow's Eve - Jane Austen Centre
Ann Radcliff: Mother of the Gothic Novel - Jane Austen Centre
The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe - Project Gutenberg

Any list isn't complete without Jane's own 'Gothic' tale. Northanger Abbey

If you have any other tales to add to the list please comment!

The Mysteries of Udolpho

THE MYSTERIES OF UDOLPHO

A Romance
Interspersed With Some Pieces of Poetry

By Ann Radcliffe

Fate sits on these dark battlements, and frowns,
And, as the portals open to receive me,
Her voice, in sullen echoes through the courts,
Tells of a nameless deed.

I was taking with a friend and fellow JASNA member and we were discussing how Northanger Abbey is kind of under appreciated. We agreed that it is probably due to not many people having read The Mysteries of Udolpho by Anne Radcliffe and not understanding the "inside jokes." I have to admit I have not read this book. I've read a detail plot summary so I understood the references and satirical aspects of NA. I think it's time I finally read this Gothic classic.
